Definition and types of forced induction and cooling system components
A turbocharger is a device that uses exhaust gases to drive a turbine that compresses air in the engine, increasing its efficiency. Air conditioning compressors, such as a BMW E90 AC compressor or a Golf 5 AC compressor, are responsible for compressing the refrigerant in the air conditioning system. BMW E60 AC condensers act as heat exchangers, lowering the temperature of the refrigerant before it circulates through the system. Thanks to these components, it is possible to effectively manage temperature and air pressure in the engine and cooling system.
How do turbochargers, superchargers, and radiators work?
Turbochargers, superchargers, and radiators play different but complementary roles in improving engine performance:
- Turbochargers – increase the amount of air supplied to the engine, which allows for more fuel to be burned and power to be increased.
- Superchargers – work similarly to turbochargers but are mechanically driven, allowing for an immediate power boost without lag.
- Intercoolers – lower the temperature of compressed air before it is delivered to the engine, which increases combustion efficiency and prevents engine overheating.
