What is the construction and purpose of doors, trunk lids, and tailgates?

Doors, trunk lids, and tailgates are body elements mounted in the side and rear sections of the vehicle. They usually consist of an outer skin, internal reinforcements, mounting points, a lock, hinges, and spaces for additional equipment. Their task is to close utility openings, protect the interior, and provide access to the cabin or cargo area.

What are doors, trunk lids, and tailgates used for?

Doors, trunk lids, and tailgates are used to safely open and close the vehicle interior and separate the cabin and trunk from external conditions. They also affect tightness, acoustic comfort, and proper body panel alignment. A faulty lock, hinge, or seal can hinder daily vehicle use and cause problems with closing.

What is the construction and function of a door seal?

A door seal is a flexible element mounted on the perimeter of the door or door opening. It serves to limit the penetration of water, dust, and noise into the vehicle interior and improves the pressure of the closed door. Its profile, length, and mounting method vary depending on the car model, mounting side, and body version.

How to choose a door or lid for a specific car version?

It is best to compare the OEM number, mounting side, body type, and pre-facelift or facelift version. It is also worth checking for the presence of holes for trim, glass, wiper, electrical wiring, and lock. For complete parts, color and compatibility with equipment already installed in the car also matter.

What symptoms indicate wear of elements cooperating with doors and tailgates?

Typical symptoms include door sagging, harder closing, creaking when opening, leaks, and uneven gaps between body elements. In the trunk lid, a problem with maintaining the open position often appears, which usually indicates worn gas struts. It is also worth assessing the condition of the lock, latch, and hinges.

How to maintain doors, trunk lids, and tailgates after installation?

After installation, it is good to regularly clean the edges, water drains, and contact points of seals with the body. Hinges and locks should be periodically lubricated with a suitable agent, and the paint should be protected against moisture and dirt. Thanks to this, the elements maintain tightness, operate more smoothly, and retain proper fitment for longer.
