What is the construction and purpose of camshafts?

Camshafts are components of the timing system responsible for controlling valve operation in the engine. A typical camshaft consists of bearing journals, lobes, and parts that cooperate with the timing drive and lubrication system. It is mounted in the cylinder head or engine block, depending on the engine design.

What are camshafts used for?

Camshafts are used to open and close valves at the appropriate moment in the engine's operating cycle. This allows the air-fuel mixture to be properly drawn in and exhaust gases to be effectively removed from the cylinder. Their operation affects power, fuel consumption, operating smoothness, and proper synchronization with the crankshaft.

What is the construction and function of valve tappets?

Valve tappets are intermediate elements between the camshaft lobe and the valve or rocker arm. Their task is to transfer movement while maintaining the appropriate clearance and smoothness of the mechanism. Depending on the design, they may work with hydraulic lash adjustment, which is important for quiet and stable engine operation.

How to choose camshafts for a specific engine version?

The safest way is to compare the OEM part number, engine code, fuel type, and manufacturer markings. It is also worth checking interchangeable numbers and compatibility with accessories such as the phase regulator, tappets, or timing gears. For units with advanced valve control, the cylinder head version and equipment also matter.

What symptoms may indicate camshaft wear?

Typical symptoms include tapping noises from the top of the engine, loss of power, uneven operation, and increased fuel consumption. In some cases, exhaust emission problems or timing synchronization errors may also occur. Such symptoms should be cross-referenced with an inspection of the lobe surfaces and cooperating components.

How to maintain camshafts after installation?

The basis is regular engine oil changes and the use of lubricant with parameters specified for the given unit. You should also monitor the condition of the timing drive and react to unusual noises from the cylinder head area. During any work on the system, it is also worth evaluating the cooperating tappets, rocker arms, and adjustment elements.
